Ioannes : Caput 14

John 14: The Way, the Truth, and the Life

Chapter 14 of the Gospel of John presents Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life. In a moment of sadness and uncertainty, Jesus comforts his disciples after his imminent departure. This passage promises the coming of the Holy Spirit, the peace of Christ, and intimate union with the Father. It addresses essential themes such as the exclusivity of Jesus for salvation, the work of the Spirit, and the importance of obedience.

John 14 offers us a message of hope, even in the midst of sadness. Through this comforting text, we invite you to consider five biblical passages that illuminate these precious promises.

1. Deuteronomy 6:4

"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord." Jesus reaffirms this fundamental truth of the Jewish faith when he declares: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

2. Joel 2:28

"And afterward it shall come to pass, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. » Jesus' promise of the Holy Spirit in John 14:16-17 echoes this prophecy of Joel.

3. Psalms 27:1

"The Lord is my light and my salvation; of whom shall I be afraid? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" » Jesus' comforting words in John 14:1, "Let not your heart be troubled", reflect the confidence expressed in this psalm.

4. Ezekiel 36:27

"I will put my Spirit within you and lead you to act according to my decrees and faithfully obey my laws. » Jesus' promise of the Holy Spirit in John 14:26 fulfills this prophecy of Ezekiel.

5. Isaiah 9:6

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulders. And he shall be called Wonderful Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." » Jesus' statements concerning his oneness with the Father in John 14:9-11 echo this messianic prophecy of Isaiah.

Meditating on these passages, we find strength and hope in the promises of Jesus, who guides us on the path to eternal life.
