Leviticus - Chapter 12

Leviticus 12.1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Leviticus 12.2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean. Leviticus 12.3 And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. Leviticus 12.4 And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled. Leviticus 12.5 But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days. Leviticus 12.6 And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest: Leviticus 12.7 Who shall offer it before the LORD, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that hath born a male or a female. Leviticus 12.8 And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

Ritual Purity and Motherhood in Leviticus 12

Chapter 12 of the book of Leviticus addresses essential laws regarding purification after childbirth. This text questions the profound connection between motherhood and ritual purity. In precise detail, it outlines the periods of impurity and the sacrifices required after the birth of a son or daughter. This chapter highlights the sanctity of life, the importance of purification, and expresses gratitude to God for the gift of new life.

These laws, far from being simple rules, reflect biological realities and profound spiritual truths. They invite us to explore our relationship with the divine and with life itself. Here we offer five biblical passages that shed light on the symbolism and relevance of the laws of purification established in Leviticus 12.

Luke 2:22-24

"When the days of their purification according to the Law of Moses were completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord: 'Every firstborn male shall be holy to the Lord'). »

This passage illustrates how Mary and Joseph respected the laws of purification after childbirth, in accordance with the prescriptions of Leviticus 12.

Galatians 4:4-5

“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. »

Through these verses, Paul refers to the laws of Leviticus 12, emphasizing that Jesus was born "under the law," which includes the rules of purification after birth.

Psalms 51:5

"I know that I have been a sinner from birth, even from the time my mother conceived me. »

This psalm resonates with the idea of impurity associated with birth, thus reinforcing the need for purification as mentioned in Leviticus 12.

John 3:1-6

"Jesus answered, 'I tell you the truth: no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, but that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.' » »

In this passage, Jesus introduces a new type of birth, contrasting physical birth, which requires purification according to Leviticus 12, with spiritual birth.

Job 14:1, 4

"A man born of a woman lives a short time and endures many hardships. [...] Who can bring something clean out of the unclean? No one!"

Job reflects on the nature of human birth, echoing concepts of impurity related to birth, such as those established in Leviticus 12.

These passages, resonating with the laws of purification, remind us of the beauty and complexity of life, as well as our call to spiritual purification and gratitude to our Creator.
