Job - Chapter 26

Job 26.1 But Job answered and said, Job 26.2 How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest thou the arm that hath no strength? Job 26.3 How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom? and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is? Job 26.4 To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose spirit came from thee? Job 26.5 Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof. Job 26.6 Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering. Job 26.7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. Job 26.8 He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them. Job 26.9 He holdeth back the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it. Job 26.10 He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end. Job 26.11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof. Job 26.12 He divideth the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud. Job 26.13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent. Job 26.14 Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?

Job : Chapter 26

The Wisdom and Majesty of God in the Book of Job

Job chapter 26 vividly illustrates Job's wisdom and eloquence. Faced with the limited perspectives of his friends, Job responds with an impressive speech describing the power and majesty of God in creation, thus surpassing the understanding of his interlocutors. This text explores essential themes such as divine omnipotence, the mysteries of creation, and the limits of human understanding.

Job 26 reveals Job's profound awareness of God's greatness. We invite you to explore with us five biblical passages that relate to the magnificent themes of this inspiring chapter.

Psalm 104:5-9

"You have established the earth on its foundations, so that it will never be moved. [...] You have set a boundary that the waters cannot pass over; they will never cover the earth again." This psalm describes God's power over creation in a similar way to Job 26.

Proverbs 30:4

"Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the winds in his hands? Who has wrapped the waters in his mantle? Who has fixed all the boundaries of the earth? What is your name and that of your son? Tell me if you know!" These rhetorical questions recall the description of God's power in Job 26.

Colossians 1:16-17

"For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or principalities, powers or authorities; all things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things consist." This New Testament text echoes the description of God's creative and sustaining power in Job 26.

Jeremiah 10:12-13

"But God created the earth by his power; he established the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. With the sound of his thunder, the waters of the heavens roar; he makes the clouds rise from the horizons. He makes lightning for rain and from his storehouses he brings out the wind." Jeremiah's description of God's power over nature resembles that of Job 26.

Isaiah 40:26

"Lift up your eyes and look to the heights. Who has created all this? He who brings forth the host of stars, one by one, and calls each one by name. Because of their great power and the strength of their authority, none of them fails to attend." Just as in Job 26, Isaiah describes God's power over the heavenly bodies.

In conclusion, these biblical passages remind us of the infinite greatness of God and the majesty of His creation. Through the words of Job and other sacred writers, we are invited to meditate on the divine power that governs our world and our place within this magnificent creation.
