Job - Chapter 25

Job 25.1 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said, Job 25.2 Dominion and fear are with him, he maketh peace in his high places. Job 25.3 Is there any number of his armies? and upon whom doth not his light arise? Job 25.4 How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? Job 25.5 Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight. Job 25.6 How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?

Job : Chapter 25

The Greatness of God and the Insignificance of Man

Job chapter 25 presents Bildad's brief final speech. This passage summarizes the traditional view of divine justice, reaffirming the greatness and holiness of God in contrast to the insignificance and sinfulness of man. In this short text, Bildad addresses fundamental themes such as divine transcendence, the fallen human condition, and the impossibility of man's justification before God.

Job 25 marks the exhaustion of the arguments of Job's friends. With this in mind, we invite you to meditate on five biblical passages that shed light on the central themes of this concise chapter.

Psalms 8:3-4

"When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set there, I ask, 'What is man, that you are concerned about him? Or the son of man, why should you worry about him?'" This psalm echoes the theme of Job 25 about the greatness of God, contrasting with the insignificance of man.

Isaiah 6:5

"Then I said, 'Woe is me! I am undone! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!'" This statement by Isaiah about human impurity before God mirrors Bildad's argument in Job 25 about the impossibility of man being pure before God.

Romans 3:23

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." This verse reaffirms Job 25's point about the universality of human sin.

Psalm 144:3-4

"What is man, O Lord, that you care for him? The son of man, that you are mindful of him? Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow." As in Job 25, this psalm contrasts the greatness of God with the fragility and brevity of human life.

Hebrews 1:3

"The Son is the brightness of God's glory and the exact expression of his being, upholding all things by his powerful word. Having accomplished the purification of sins, He sat at the right hand of the Majesty on high." This verse presents Christ as the answer to the question implicit in Job 25 about how man can be righteous before God. Meditating on these passages, we are invited to recognize our own smallness in the face of divine majesty, while celebrating the grace offered to us through Christ.
