Job - Chapter 17

Job 17.1 My breath is corrupt, my days are extinct, the graves are ready for me. Job 17.2 Are there not mockers with me? and doth not mine eye continue in their provocation? Job 17.3 Lay down now, put me in a surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands with me? Job 17.4 For thou hast hid their heart from understanding: therefore shalt thou not exalt them. Job 17.5 He that speaketh flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children shall fail. Job 17.6 He hath made me also a byword of the people; and aforetime I was as a tabret. Job 17.7 Mine eye also is dim by reason of sorrow, and all my members are as a shadow. Job 17.8 Upright men shall be astonied at this, and the innocent shall stir up himself against the hypocrite. Job 17.9 The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. Job 17.10 But as for you all, do ye return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you. Job 17.11 My days are past, my purposes are broken off, even the thoughts of my heart. Job 17.12 They change the night into day: the light is short because of darkness. Job 17.13 If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness. Job 17.14 I have said to corruption, Thou art my father: to the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister. Job 17.15 And where is now my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it? Job 17.16 They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.

Job's Lament: A Journey Through Despair and Hope

Chapter 17 of the Book of Job immerses us in the profound lament of this suffering man. Through his words, we discover how Job perceives his future, as well as his friends' reaction to his suffering. This text highlights Job's despondency in the face of impending death, as well as his disappointment at the lack of understanding of those around him.

Themes Addressed in Job 17

The themes explored in this chapter are poignant: the proximity of death, a shattered reputation, and hope rising beyond the grave. Job 17 illustrates Job's constant struggle to maintain his faith in seemingly hopeless circumstances. Let's reflect together on five biblical passages that resonate with the dark thoughts of this difficult chapter.

1. Psalms 88:3-4

"My soul is filled with anguish, and my life draws near to the grave. I am numbered among those who go down to the pit; I am like a man whose strength has passed away."

These verses reflect Job's despair expressed in Job 17:1, where he senses that death is near.

2. Proverbs 17:3

"The crucible is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart."

This proverb about refinement through trials relates to Job's experience, as described in Job 17:9.

3. Isaiah 57:1

"The righteous perishes, and no one considers it in their heart; the godly are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away from evil."

This verse echoes Job's sentiment in Job 17:8-9, where he speaks of the righteous who persist in trials.

4. 2 Corinthians 4:16-17

"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day, for our light and momentary sufferings are working for us an eternal glory that surpasses all."

The apostle Paul speaks of perseverance in the midst of suffering, resonating with Job's determination in Job 17:9.

5. Revelation 2:10

"Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the Devil will throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will be persecuted for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life."

This promise of reward for the faithful evokes Job's hope in seeking justice, even after death, as he expresses in Job 17:13-16.

By meditating on these passages, we can better understand the depth of Job's suffering and the light of hope that shines through his despair. May our faith be strengthened in these difficult times, following the example of Job, who, despite everything, sought to remain faithful to God.
