Chapter 2 of the book of Zechariah presents us with a vision of a glorious future for the city of Jerusalem. This text, rich in divine promises, offers us a glimpse of God's plans for His chosen city. Through powerful symbols, it evokes the expansion and prosperity that await Jerusalem.
In this vision, a man holds a measuring line, a symbol of the city's future expansion. God proclaims His protecting presence and invites the exiles to return. This chapter addresses essential themes such as God's dwelling among His people, the inclusion of nations, and the security that comes from faith in God.
To better understand the central themes of this inspiring chapter, let's consider five biblical passages that reinforce the message of Zechariah 2.
"The angel who spoke to me had a golden rod as a measure to measure the city, its gates, and its walls. The city was four-sided, of equal length and width. He measured the city with the rod and found that it was 2,200 kilometers long; its width and height were equal." to the length." This passage from Revelation echoes the vision of the man with the measuring line in Zechariah 2:1-2.
"The nations will come to its light, and kings to the brightness of its dawn." This prophecy from Isaiah about the nations coming to Jerusalem aligns with the promise in Zechariah 2:11, which announces that many nations would join the Lord.
"The city's perimeter shall be eighteen thousand cubits. And from that day forward, the name of the city shall be: THE LORD IS THERE." Ezekiel's description of the city, with God at its center, reflects God's promise, stated in Zechariah 2:5, to be a wall of fire around Jerusalem.
"The days will come," declares the Lord, "when this city will be rebuilt for me, from the tower of Hananeel to the corner gate. [...] The city will never be uprooted or destroyed." This prophecy of Jeremiah about the rebuilding of Jerusalem complements Zechariah's visions of the city's restoration.
"God is in her! He will not be shaken! God will help you from the dawn." This psalm expresses the same confidence in Jerusalem's divine protection that we find in Zechariah 2:5.
Thus, through these passages, we can appreciate the depth and beauty of God's promise for Jerusalem, a chosen city that remains at the heart of God's plan for humanity. May this vision inspire us to live in hope and faith, awaiting the fulfillment of God's promises.
