Zechariah - Chapter 8

Zechariah 8.1 Again the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying, Zechariah 8.2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury. Zechariah 8.3 Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain. Zechariah 8.4 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age. Zechariah 8.5 And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof. Zechariah 8.6 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the LORD of hosts. Zechariah 8.7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country; Zechariah 8.8 And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness. Zechariah 8.9 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Let your hands be strong, ye that hear in these days these words by the mouth of the prophets, which were in the day that the foundation of the house of the LORD of hosts was laid, that the temple might be built. Zechariah 8.10 For before these days there was no hire for man, nor any hire for beast; neither was there any peace to him that went out or came in because of the affliction: for I set all men every one against his neighbour. Zechariah 8.11 But now I will not be unto the residue of this people as in the former days, saith the LORD of hosts. Zechariah 8.12 For the seed shall be prosperous; the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things. Zechariah 8.13 And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse among the heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear not, but let your hands be strong. Zechariah 8.14 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; As I thought to punish you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath, saith the LORD of hosts, and I repented not: Zechariah 8.15 So again have I thought in these days to do well unto Jerusalem and to the house of Judah: fear ye not. Zechariah 8.16 These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates: Zechariah 8.17 And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD. Zechariah 8.18 And the word of the LORD of hosts came unto me, saying, Zechariah 8.19 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace. Zechariah 8.20 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities: Zechariah 8.21 And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also. Zechariah 8.22 Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD. Zechariah 8.23 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.

The Promise of Restoration in Zechariah Chapter 8

Zechariah chapter 8 paints a picture of restoration and blessing for Jerusalem. What glorious future does God promise for His beloved city? This inspiring text underscores God's zeal for Zion and foretells the peace, prosperity, and renewal of Jerusalem. By transforming fasts into joyful festivals, this chapter also predicts the attraction of nations to this holy city.

Zechariah 8 addresses profound themes such as divine faithfulness, social transformation, and Israel's role among the nations. To deepen the meaning of this hopeful chapter, we invite you to consider five biblical passages that resonate with its messages.

Isaiah 2:2-3

"In the last days, the mountain of the Lord's temple will be established as the chief mountain; he will be exalted above the hills, and all nations will flow to him. Many will come and say, 'Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.'"

This prophecy of Isaiah aligns perfectly with Zechariah 8's vision of Jerusalem as a center of worship for all nations.

Micah 4:1-2

"In the last days it will come to pass that the mountain of the Lord's temple will be established as the chief mountain; he will be exalted above the hills, and people will run to him. Many nations will come and say, 'Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.'"

Micah offers a vision similar to that of Zechariah 8, depicting Jerusalem as a global spiritual center.

Jeremiah 31:38-40

"The days will come, says the Lord, where this city shall be rebuilt for me, from the tower of Hananeel to the corner gate. The measuring line shall extend from there directly to the hill Garebe, and then loop back to Goa. The entire valley where the dead bodies and ashes are thrown, and all the terraces as far as the Kidron Valley, as far as the corner of the Horse Gate on the east, shall be holy to the Lord. The city shall never again be uprooted or destroyed."

Jeremiah thus prophesies the restoration of Jerusalem, a theme that Zechariah 8 also addresses forcefully.

Amos 9:14-15

"I will bring back the outcasts of Israel; they They will rebuild the devastated cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will cultivate orchards and eat their fruit. I will plant them in their own land, so that they will never again be uprooted from the land I have given them, says the Lord your God."

Amos predicts the restoration of Israel, a theme that Zechariah 8 expands on with the promise of renewal for Jerusalem.

Ezekiel 36:33-36

"This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I cleanse you from all your sins, I will make the cities inhabited and the waste places rebuilt. The wastelands will be cultivated and will not remain desolate for all who pass by. They will say, "This land that was desolate has become like the Garden of Eden; the cities that were in ruins, desolate, and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited. Then the nations that are left around you will know that I, the Lord, have rebuilt what was destroyed and replanted what was desolate. I, the Lord, have spoken it and I will do it."

Ezekiel also prophesies the restoration and transformation of Israel, themes that Zechariah 8 addresses with inspiring clarity.
