Zechariah - Chapter 2

Zechariah 2.1 I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked, and behold a man with a measuring line in his hand. Zechariah 2.2 Then said I, Whither goest thou? And he said unto me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof. Zechariah 2.3 And, behold, the angel that talked with me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him, Zechariah 2.4 And said unto him, Run, speak to this young man, saying, Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein: Zechariah 2.5 For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her. Zechariah 2.6 Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith the LORD: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the LORD. Zechariah 2.7 Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon. Zechariah 2.8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye. Zechariah 2.9 For, behold, I will shake mine hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me. Zechariah 2.10 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. Zechariah 2.11 And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee. Zechariah 2.12 And the LORD shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again. Zechariah 2.13 Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.

The Glorious Vision of Jerusalem according to Zechariah 2

Chapter 2 of the book of Zechariah presents us with a vision of a glorious future for the city of Jerusalem. This text, rich in divine promises, offers us a glimpse of God's plans for His chosen city. Through powerful symbols, it evokes the expansion and prosperity that await Jerusalem.

God's Protecting Presence

In this vision, a man holds a measuring line, a symbol of the city's future expansion. God proclaims His protecting presence and invites the exiles to return. This chapter addresses essential themes such as God's dwelling among His people, the inclusion of nations, and the security that comes from faith in God.

Five Enlightening Bible Passages

To better understand the central themes of this inspiring chapter, let's consider five biblical passages that reinforce the message of Zechariah 2.

Revelation 21:15-16

"The angel who spoke to me had a golden rod as a measure to measure the city, its gates, and its walls. The city was four-sided, of equal length and width. He measured the city with the rod and found that it was 2,200 kilometers long; its width and height were equal." to the length." This passage from Revelation echoes the vision of the man with the measuring line in Zechariah 2:1-2.

Isaiah 60:3

"The nations will come to its light, and kings to the brightness of its dawn." This prophecy from Isaiah about the nations coming to Jerusalem aligns with the promise in Zechariah 2:11, which announces that many nations would join the Lord.

Ezekiel 48:35

"The city's perimeter shall be eighteen thousand cubits. And from that day forward, the name of the city shall be: THE LORD IS THERE." Ezekiel's description of the city, with God at its center, reflects God's promise, stated in Zechariah 2:5, to be a wall of fire around Jerusalem.

Jeremiah 31:38-40

"The days will come," declares the Lord, "when this city will be rebuilt for me, from the tower of Hananeel to the corner gate. [...] The city will never be uprooted or destroyed." This prophecy of Jeremiah about the rebuilding of Jerusalem complements Zechariah's visions of the city's restoration.

Psalms 46:5

"God is in her! He will not be shaken! God will help you from the dawn." This psalm expresses the same confidence in Jerusalem's divine protection that we find in Zechariah 2:5.

Thus, through these passages, we can appreciate the depth and beauty of God's promise for Jerusalem, a chosen city that remains at the heart of God's plan for humanity. May this vision inspire us to live in hope and faith, awaiting the fulfillment of God's promises.
