Chapter 22 of Revelation concludes divine revelation and offers us precious final promises for the Church. This climactic passage evokes the river of life, the tree of life, and the throne of God in the eternal city, thus emphasizing the imminence of Christ's return and the faithfulness of his words. It invites us to meditate on essential themes such as eternal hope, perpetual worship, and the closure of the biblical canon.
We invite you to reflect on five biblical passages that correlate with the final message of this last chapter of Scripture.
"And out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food; also the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil." This verse reminds us that the tree of life, mentioned at the beginning of the Bible, reappears at the end in Revelation 22:2, thus symbolizing the restoration of paradise.
"And by the banks of the river on either side shall grow every tree bearing fruit suitable for food; its leaf shall not fall, nor shall its fruit fall; in its months it shall bear new fruit, for its waters issue from the sanctuary; its fruit shall be for food, and its leaf for medicine." Ezekiel's vision of fruit trees on the banks of the river flowing from the temple is echoed in Revelation 22:1-2.
"But you, Daniel, close up the words and seal the book until the time of the end; many will search for it, and knowledge will be multiplied." The command to seal the book in Daniel contrasts with the command in Revelation 22:10 not to seal the words of the prophecy, thus indicating the fulfillment of the times.
"Behold, the Lord God will come with power, and his arm will rule; behold, his reward is with him, and his reward is before him." This verse from Isaiah resonates with Revelation 22:12, where Jesus promises to return quickly with his reward.
"In that day living waters will flow from Jerusalem, half of them into the eastern sea, and half of them in the western sea; in summer and in winter it will be." Zechariah's vision of living waters flowing from Jerusalem is reflected in the river of the water of life in Revelation 22:1.
As we meditate on these passages, may our faith be renewed and our hope in Christ's promise strengthened, guiding us toward the eternal light He offers us. Amen.
