Divine Justice According to Psalm 82

Psalm 82 presents a vivid picture of divine judgment against unjust judges. This powerful psalm invites us to reflect on God's view of human corruption. It depicts God presiding over a heavenly assembly, rebuking those called to administer justice on earth. This text highlights the responsibility of leaders, God's concern for the oppressed, and His supreme sovereignty.

Psalm 82 powerfully reminds us of the imperative of justice and the ultimate responsibility each person has before God. To deepen our understanding, we invite you to examine five biblical passages that amplify the crucial themes of this prophetic psalm.

John 10:34-35

Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I said, You are gods'? If he called 'gods' those to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken)?" In this passage, Jesus directly quotes Psalm 82:6, applying it in a new context to emphasize the dignity of human beings as children of God.

Deuteronomy 1:17

“Do not discriminate between persons in judgment; listen to both small and great. Do not be afraid of anyone, for judgment belongs to God. Bring the most difficult cases to me; I will hear them.” » This commandment reflects the call for impartial justice found in Psalm 82:2-4, emphasizing the importance of a fair judgment.

Micah 6:8

“He has shown you, O man, what is good and what the Lord requires: to do justice, to love faithfulness, and to walk humbly with your God. » This verse accurately summarizes the call to justice and righteousness that permeates Psalm 82, exhorting us to live according to God's precepts.

Isaiah 1:17

“Learn to do good! Seek justice, put an end to oppression. Fight for the rights of the fatherless, plead for the widow.” » This prophetic call echoes the exhortations of Psalm 82:3-4, which remind us of our duty to defend the most vulnerable in our society.

Revelation 19:11

"I saw heaven opened, and before me a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True, who judges and wages war in righteousness. » This vision of the final judgment reflects the expectation of divine justice expressed in Psalm 82:8, offering us the hope of a complete restoration and a reign of eternal justice.

Meditating on these passages, we are encouraged to work for justice, to be aware of our responsibilities, and to act with compassion toward those in need. May Psalm 82 be a source of inspiration for each of us in our quest for justice and truth.
