Isaiah - Chapter 50

Isaiah 50.1 Thus saith the LORD, Where is the bill of your mother’s divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away. Isaiah 50.2 Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst. Isaiah 50.3 I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering. Isaiah 50.4 The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. Isaiah 50.5 The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. Isaiah 50.6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting. Isaiah 50.7 For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. Isaiah 50.8 He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me. Isaiah 50.9 Behold, the Lord GOD will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up. Isaiah 50.10 Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God. Isaiah 50.11 Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.

Isaiah : Chapter 50

Reflection on Isaiah Chapter 50 Chapter 50 of the book of Isaiah presents us with the exemplary obedience of the Servant of the Lord. This passage raises a fundamental question: how does the Messiah face rejection? Through this prophetic text, we discover the Servant's submission in the face of suffering, a poignant foreshadowing of Christ's Passion. At the same time, this chapter highlights Israel's infidelity while inviting us to a deep trust in God. Isaiah 50 addresses essential themes such as obedience, faith in the face of trials, and the promise of divine vindication to come. To deepen our understanding, we invite you to meditate on five biblical passages that shed light on these profound themes from this difficult chapter.

Mark 14:65

"Some began to spit on him; they blindfolded him and, striking him, said to him, 'Prophesy!' And the guards led him away, beating him." This treatment of Jesus finds a poignant echo in the prophecy of Isaiah 50:6, where the Servant offers his back to be scourged and his face to be spit on.

Romans 8:33-34

"Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies them. Who shall condemn them? Jesus Christ died, and was raised again, and is at the right hand of God, and also intercedes for us." This passage resonates with the themes of Isaiah 50:8-9, where the Servant of God manifests deep confidence in his justification.

Matthew 26:39

"Going a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed, 'My Father, if it is possible, take this cup away from me; not as I will, but as you will.'" Jesus' obedience is reflected in the attitude of the Servant of Isaiah 50:5, who does not rebel or turn away from the divine will.

John 8:29

"He who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him." This statement of Jesus echoes Isaiah 50:7-9, where the Servant expresses his confidence in God's help and presence.

Hebrews 12:2

"Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. For the joy that was set before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." This verse illustrates the resolute attitude of the Servant of Isaiah 50:7, who faces Suffering with determination, confident in God's faithfulness.

By meditating on these scriptures, we are called to imitate the obedience and faith of the Servant through the challenges we face in our own lives. May our trust in God be renewed, and may we find the strength to face our trials, like our Lord Jesus Christ.
