Hosea - Chapter 7

Hosea 7.1 When I would have healed Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria: for they commit falsehood; and the thief cometh in, and the troop of robbers spoileth without. Hosea 7.2 And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have beset them about; they are before my face. Hosea 7.3 They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies. Hosea 7.4 They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceaseth from raising after he hath kneaded the dough, until it be leavened. Hosea 7.5 In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners. Hosea 7.6 For they have made ready their heart like an oven, whiles they lie in wait: their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth as a flaming fire. Hosea 7.8 Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned. Hosea 7.9 Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not. Hosea 7.10 And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this. Hosea 7.11 Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria. Hosea 7.12 When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard. Hosea 7.13 Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them! because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me. Hosea 7.14 And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me. Hosea 7.15 Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me. Hosea 7.16 They return, but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.

The Corruption of Israel According to Hosea 7

Chapter 7 of the book of Hosea vividly exposes the profound corruption of Israel. This moral decadence not only echoes a social crisis, but also impacts the people's relationship with God. Through powerful metaphors, such as a hot oven and a naive dove, the prophet Hosea illustrates Israel's deplorable spiritual condition.

Central Themes of the Chapter

Hosea 7 addresses crucial themes such as distorted self-perception, futile political alliances, and the refusal to return to God. This striking text reveals God's frustration with the fickleness of His people, who seem lost in their own errors.

Biblical Reflection on the Themes of Hosea 7

To better understand the significance of the messages in Hosea 7, let's examine five biblical passages that resonate with the themes addressed in this revelatory chapter.

Romans 1:21

"For although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or give thanks to him, but became futile in their thinking and their foolish hearts were darkened." This verse reflects the theme of Hosea 7:2 on God's lack of recognition despite His actions.

Matthew 13:33

"Again, he told them another parable: 'The kingdom of heaven is like yeast, which a woman took and mixed with much flour, and all the dough was leavened.'" This image can be compared to the negative aspect of yeast in Hosea 7:4, showing the different uses of the metaphor.

1 Peter 5:8

"Be sober and vigilant. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." This passage echoes the warning in Hosea 7:12 regarding the dangers facing Israel.

James 1:8

"Being double-minded, unstable in all your ways." This reflects the fickleness of Israel described in Hosea 7:8-11, highlighting the need for spiritual stability.

Psalms 78:34

"When God punished them, they sought him; earnestly they turned to him again." This verse contrasts with the lack of true repentance observed in Hosea 7:14-16, emphasizing the importance of genuine conversion.
