Deuteronomy : Chapter 34

The Death of Moses: A Solemn Moment

Deuteronomy chapter 34 tells us about the final moments of Moses, a great leader and prophet of God. This moving passage describes not only his vision of the Promised Land, but also his death on Mount Nebo. Through these verses, we discover the unique greatness of Moses, highlighting his intimacy with God and his invaluable role in the history of the people of Israel.

A Leadership Transition

This chapter marks the end of an era and sets the stage for Joshua's new leadership. The rest of this story is revealed in the Book of Joshua, where we read:

Joshua 1:1-2: "After the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' assistant, "My servant Moses is dead. Now therefore, you and all this people, prepare to cross the Jordan into the land that I am giving to the Israelites." This passage clearly illustrates the leadership transition after Moses' death, as described in Deuteronomy 34.

The Reference to Moses

The book of Jude also sheds interesting light on Moses' death:

Jude 1:9: "But even Michael the archangel, while he was arguing with the devil about Moses' body, did not dare to bring a blasphemous accusation against him, but said, 'The Lord rebuke him!'" This verse refers to a tradition concerning Moses' death, recorded in Deuteronomy 34, and highlights the reverence that surrounds his memory.

Moses in the Glory of God

The Transfiguration of Jesus, where Moses appears alongside Elijah, reminds us of Moses' eternal importance:

Matthew 17:3: "Moses and Elijah appeared before them and spoke to Jesus." This appearance underlines the continuity of Moses' work even after his death, as mentioned in Deuteronomy 34.

The Ministry of Moses

The book of Hebrews summarizes Moses' ministry in these words:

Hebrews 3:5: "Moses was faithful as a servant in all the house of God, testifying of what would be said in the future." This passage summarizes Moses' lasting legacy, the conclusion of which is recorded in Deuteronomy 34.

A Summary of the Life of Moses

Finally, in the book of Acts, Stephen summarizes Moses' life:

Acts 7:23, 30: "When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his brothers, the Israelites. [...] After another forty years, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness near Mount Sinai, in the flames of a burning bush." This passage evokes the 40 years of Moses' life, as mentioned in Deuteronomy 34:7.

Conclusion

Let us reflect together on these biblical passages that highlight the lasting legacy of this faithful servant of God. Moses' life and death remind us of the importance of faith, obedience, and trust in God, even in times of transition and change.
